Ambassador Buttress, according to legend, was so-named by one of the first climbers to visit the cliff -- following an encounter there with Donald C. Owens, a local eccentric. The climber was surprised to find Owens in this remote location, and was more surprised when Owens introduced himself as the "General Ambassador of the Universe." Though he did not drive, Owens was as likely to be spotted strolling through Beckley banks as he was standing alone in a forest. Ambassador Buttress, (Map (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.06724&lon=-81.07298&s=48&size=l&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG) ), is among the smallest and least-known climbing areas in the New River Gorge, and is located just south of the Bridge Area and Fern Buttress. Its cliffs range in height from 30 to 50 feet with slabbed and vertical walls.
