Beards Fork Petroglyphs
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
Location: Beards Fork, WV, in Fayette County
Sometime called the "Lettered Rocks" or "Chisled Rocks", the Beards Fork Petroglphs have pictures of various wild animals and other markings carved into the rock. Most likely this rock art was made by Native American or their ancestors.
The Beards Fork Petroglyphs are located only a few miles from the Ancient Walls, located near Mount Carbon. This nearness has lead many different writers, over many decades, to speculate about a connection between the two sites. Some have suggested the lettered rocks acted as a "signpost" indicating directions to the Mount Carbon site, or providing some information about the ancient walls found there. However, such theories are apparently based upon "wild guesses," rather than being based upon scientific evidence.
In the early 1900's, the Dempsey Indian Mound was discovered, at a location only about 3 air-miles away from the Beards Fork Petroglyphs.
