Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, in Beckley, WV, provides its visitors an in-depth look into the history coal mining. Visitors may ride authentic "man-cars" on rails through tunnels more than 500 feet beneath Beckley's western hills. Exhibits along the way explore the history of low-seam mining from its hand-loading era through modern mechanization. Veteran miners serve as guides and can provide detailed answers and firsthand accounts.
A gift shop, mining museum, and restored "coal camp" buildings -- including a superintendent's home, a miner's home, and a church and school -- are also open to visitors. Guests touring the mine should bring a jacket: temperatures inside remain 58-degrees year-round.
