Benwood, West Virginia

A community in Marshall County, Benwood, WV, was originally chartered in 1853, its named derived from reference to land on which the city is located as "Ben's Woods," which at the time was owned by Benjamin McMechen. The neighboring city of McMechen, WV, is named after William McMechen and his family, who were among the earliest settlers in this area. Both are located along the Ohio River in the northern panhandle of West Virginia.
