Berkeley Springs (Bath) is the county seat of Morgan County. The name of the town is Bath, the name of the post office is Berkeley Springs. Established in 1776 under the name of Bath, after Bath, England, famed for its waters. The post office name is a combination of the name Norborne Berkeley, Governor of Virginia (1768-1770), with the warm medicinal springs found here. The so-called curative value of the waters were known as early as 1747. The town was home for a time of James Rumsey, inventor of the steamboat. Berkeley Springs remains a popular tourist destination. Its historical streetscapes have been largely preserved, and many inns, shops, and restaurants have opened in its historic district.

Berkeley Springs, WV

Berkeley Springs (Bath), WV, is located about 10 miles south of Intestate 68 (I-68) at Hancock, MD, and about 27 miles northwest of Interstate 81 (I-81) at Martinsburg, WV. The Town of Bath and its historical namesake springs, now protected as the centerpiece of Berkeley Springs State Park, is among the popular tourist destinations in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. Vacationers frequent its inns, shops, and restaurants throughout the year.


Attractions

The historical Berkeley Springs themselves are the major attractions at Bath. Thousands of visitors visit to soak in its mineral waters and visit its spa. Cacapon Resort State Park is located 10 miles south of Berkeley Springs. Berkeley Castle, built on a ridge overlooking the town, is a popular private attraction.
