Bluestone River Gorge
The Bluestone River Gorge contains 20 miles of the lower Bluestone River and is protected by the National Park Service as part of the Bluestone National Scenic River. Parts of Bluestone State Park and Pipestem Resort State Park also flank the gorge. The gorge is the southernmost in a system of four gorges that cross the Allegheny highlands of southern West Virginia. The New River Gorge is another such feature, located just north of the Bluestone and likewise protected as national parkland.
The gorge was formed as the ancient Bluestone River wore away at the sandstones of the surrounding tablelands, creating a steep-walled canyon filled with falls and rock formations.
