A community in Harrison County, Bridgeport, WV, was chartered in 1816. The town was so-named for the Simpson Creek Covered Bridge, built in 1803, the first bridge in Harrison County. Bridgeport is the home of Benjamin Wilson, distinguished frontiersman, and Joseph Johnson, the only governor of old Virginia from west of the Allegheny Mountains.
