A community in Harrison County, Bridgeport, WV, was chartered by an act passed Jan. 15, 1816, although the first European settlers arrived no later than the early-1770s. The town was so-named for the Simpson Creek Covered Bridge, built in 1803, the first bridge in Harrison County. Bridgeport was the home of Michael Benedum, oil magnate, Benjamin Wilson, distinguished frontiersman, and Joseph Johnson, the only governor of old Virginia born west of the Allegheny Mountains. By the 1910s, the Bridgeport Lamp Chimney Company and the West Virginia Pottery Company were located in Bridgeport and the Fairmont and Clarksburg Traction Company operated an electric railroad that connected the town with the area's larger cities. Bridgeport was also on the Parkersburg & Grafton Branch of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O), completed in 1857.

Today Bridgeport is an important lodging, business, and retail center. Many shops and hotels have been developed along I-79 and US-50 in and near Bridgeport.
