Brooks Falls

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

Six miles upstream of thundering Sandstone Falls on the New River, Brooks Falls is a smaller counterpart of the lower. Brooks drops 10 feet over an outcrop of the Stony Gap Sandstone and classifies as a runnable Class III rapid.

The National Park Service has developed the falls area on River Road (CR-28), on river-left, to include picnic tables, river access, and an observation area. The Big Branch Trail (http://www.newriverwv.com/Recreation_Hiking_Trails.php) ascends the wall of the canyon from the falls parking area and returns after a 1.8 mile loop.

Directions: From Interstate 64 exit 138 (Sandstone Hinton), follow WV Route 20 south eleven miles through Hinton to River Road. Follow River Road (WV Route 26) six miles. Sandstone Falls is located about two-miles downstream of Sandstone Falls.
