Early Settlers of Buckhannon, WV

In the early 1760s brothers John and Samuel Pringle deserted their military posts in northern Virginia and proceeded up Tygart River to the mouth of the Buckhannon River, and up the latter stream until they came to the mouth of Turkey Run, three miles below the present-day site of Buckhannon. Here, they took abode in the hollow cavity of a large sycamore tree. In 1767, John journeyed to the South Branch for ammunition. When he returned, he brought news of the close of the French and Indian War, which had occurred nearly five years before.
