A community in Putnam County, Buffalo was chartered in 1837, and many period-buildings yet stand. It takes its name for Buffalo Creek, a stream descriptive of the gathering-place of the many bison that roamed that section of the county. A Toyota manufacturing plant (http://www.toyota.com/about/our_business/operations/manufacturing/manu_location/tmmwv.html) , employing more than 900 workers as of 2008, is located in Buffalo and is the largest single employer in Putnam County. Buffalo may be one of the oldest communities in the United States, having been an ancient Native American town.
