Buffalo Mountain, in Logan County, is among the most prominent ridges in the southern West Virginia coalfields. One of the world's worst coal mining tragedies occured along the northern flank of the mountain on Buffalo Creek, where, in 1972, a poorly constructed dam collapsed, killing hundreds of miners and their families and leaving thousands homeless. The mountains summit reached 2,624 feet but has been lowered my the removal of the mountain by coal mining. (Two additional mountains, in Mingo County and Greenbrier County, are also named Buffalo Mountain.)
