Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park (map), southeast of Summersville, WV, in Nicholas County, protects the scene of an 1861 battle in which Union troops under Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans forced Confederate troops to evacuate entrenched positions.

During the battle, the Confederate forces repelled repeated Federal assaults, but facing Union forces numbering 5,000 men, the 1,740-man Confederates, under Brigadier General John B. Floyd, retreated south across the Gauley River that night, to a postion on Sewell Mountain about 20 miles away.
