Gambling in all its forms is popular in West Virginia. Two casinos operate at tracks in the state's northern panhandle -- at Chester, WV, and Wheeling, WV. A third casino is scheduled to open near the state capitol, at Charleston, WV, in fall 2008. All are located at established greyhound and thoroughbred tracks. A fourth track, at Charles Town, WV, in the eastern panhandle, failed to win county-wide support to allow table gambling. Video-poker cafes may be found in nearly every community. In 2005, more than 7,600 video machines were operating at 1,614 state-certified gambling locations, according to the West Virginia Lottery Commission.
