From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

Throughout the 19th Century, many changes were rapidly taking place throughout the United States and the so called "civilized world" due to the Industrial Revolution. Although much of West Virginia remained isolated and sparsely populated, the increased use of machines and machinery and the application of science was commonplace in the cities and populated areas of the state.
