Most West Virginia cities are located along major rivers that flow westward from the Appalachian Mountains. Charleston, the largest city in the state, is located on the Kanawha River, near the center of the state. The cities of Weirton, Wheeling, Huntington, and Parkersburg are located on the Ohio River along the state's western edge, while the cities of Fairmont, Clarksburg, and Morgantown are located along the Monongahela River, downstream of the Allegheny Mountains, in the north. Exceptions include Beckley, Bluefield, and Martinsburg, which were important transportation crossroads. Most communities in West Virginia are rural. Many boomtowns that were established near mines and timber operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries have since dissolved into ghost towns or have been completely reclaimed by forest.
