Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in West Virginia protect 1.3 million acres or eight-percent of the state's total area for public hunting and fishing. Seventy-three percent of WMA land in West Virginia is managed by the U.S. Forest Service through the Monongahela, Washington, and Jefferson national forests. Thirteen percent is owned by the state, and 14 percent is leased by the Wildlife Resources Section of the WV Division of Natural Resources (DNR). Wildlife Management Areas in West Virginia were called Public Hunting & Fishing Areas until the 1980s. </br>
