Centre Market Square Historic District

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

In downtown Wheeling, WV, in Ohio County, the Centre Market Square National Historic District preserves two market houses that served Westward traffic on the National Road and the commercial structures that surround them. Built in 1853, the Upper Market House is the only cast-iron columned market in the country, and has been in continuous operation since its opening. The Lower Market House, built in 1890, is a Romanesque brick structure adorned above its arches with stone-carven heads of a ram, bull, boar, and stallion. The National Road led from Washington, D.C., to the Ohio River at Wheeling, and was a primary route westward for pioneers.
