A community in Wayne County on the Ohio River, Ceredo, WV, was founded in 1857, but not incorporated until 1866. Named by Eli Thayer, then a member of Congress from Massachusetts, after Ceres, the Greek goddess of grain and harvest, because of the argicultural opportunities apparently existing there at that time. Thayer dreamed of founding a great manufacturing city there coincident with this activities to aid the emigration of anti-slavery men to Kansas.
