Charles Town, West Virginia

The count Seat of Jefferson County, Charles Town, WV, was originally chartered in 1788 and named for Charles Washington, bother of George Washington, who erected here his home, "Happy Retreat," later reconstructed and renamed "Mordington." Near Charles Town, at "Harewood," was the home of Samuel Washington, another brother of George Washington, where Dolly Payne Todd was married to James Madison, later President of the United States.

Charles Town, WV is located about: 6 miles west of Harpers Ferry, WV; 14 miles north of Shepherdstown, WV; 16 miles southeast of Martinsburg, WV; 23 miles northeast of Winchester, VA.and 34 miles south of Hagerstown, MD.

John Brown, famous abolitionist, was tried and executed in Charles Town. The town was the home of William L. Wilson, who, in 1896, while Postmaster General in President Cleveland's cabinet, established between Charles Town, Uvillia and Halltown the first rural free delivery service in the United States.
