Coal River Mountain
Coal River Mountain, in western Raleigh County, is among the highest mountains in southwestern West Virginia. Many peaks along its summit exceed 3,000 feet above sea level, such as Pond Knob (elev. 3,327 ft.), Boyd Branch Knob (elev. 3,128 ft.), and Irish Lick Knob (elev. 3,087 ft.).
The branches of the Marsh Fork and Clear Fork of the Coal River rise to the south and north of Coal River Mountain, respectively. The mountain is part of the Cumberland Mountains of southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. Its summits are slated for removal by coal-mining interests that practice mountaintop-removal mining, from which Coal River Mountain Watch and other citizens and environmental groups are trying to protect the mountain.
