Dolly Sods, also Dahle Sods, is an upland of moors and wind-carved boulders adjacent to the Allegheny Front in Randolph County. Part of the Monongahela National Forest, the area is protected within the Dolly Sods Wilderness. Trails lead throughout the sods among laurel and blueberry thickets to cliffs along the front that look eastward over the valley of the South Branch Potomac River. A harsh Canadian climate is typical in the sods; spruce therein have been flagged by the high winds along the front and only the most hardy plants survive, though stunted by cool temperatures and poor soil quality.
