Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park (map (http://www.wvamaps.com/maps/index.php?place=Droop%20Mountain%20Battlefield%20State%20Park&state=WV&lon=-80.2717&lat=38.1119&pop=0&county=Pocahontas&elev=0&scale=3)), in Pocahontas County, south of Hillsboro, WV, protects 58 acres on the summit of Droop Mountain. On November 6, 1863, Union troops under General W. W. Averell defeated Confederate forces here under General John Echols. The battle is considered the most extensive Civil War engagement in West Virginia.
