Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park (map), in Pocahontas County, south of Hillsboro, WV, protects 58 acres on the summit of Droop Mountain. On November 6, 1863, Union troops under General W. W. Averell defeated Confederate forces here under General John Echols. The battle is considered the most extensive Civil War engagement that took place in West Virginia.

Droop Mountain was the first West Virginia state park established. The park was dedicated on July 4, 1928.
