A community in Kanawha County, Dunbar, WV was incorporated in 1921. Dunbar was named for Dunbar Baines, prominent Charleston banker and lawyer.

Dunbar, WV is located is located along the north side of the Kanawha River, about: 2 miles southwest of Institue, WV; 3 miles west of South Charleston, WV; 7 miles west of Charleston, WV; 8 miles east of St. Albans, WV ; 10 miles southeast of Nitro, WV; and 9 miles southeast of Cross Lanes, WV.
