Eagle Rock, Pendleton County

Eagle Rock watches the southern entrance to The Smoke Hole canyon in Pendleton County in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. A sandstone column that rises more than 160 feet above the river bank, the formation was named for a revolutionary war soldier, Colonel William Eagle, who lived, and was buried, nearby. The rock has come to be associated with bald eagles that inhabit the Smoke Hole canyon and is often scaled by climbers.
