Eccles (map (http://www.wvamaps.com/maps/index.php?place=Eccles&state=WV&lon=-81.2661&lat=37.7831&pop=0&county=Raleigh&elev=2083&scale=3)) is a mining town on Millers Camp Branch established in the early-1900s. The Eccles mines were jointly served by the Virginian Railway (VGN) and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O). The first coal shipments were made during the year ending June 30, 1908 by the New River Collieries Company, a consolidation that owned several mines throughout the New River Coalfield. On April 28, 1914, an explosion occurred at the Eccles No. 5 mine that killed 183 persons.
