Visitors explore the monuments at Fairfax Stone State Park

Fairfax Stone State Park (map), north of Thomas, WV, marks the headspring of the North Branch of the Potomac River and the site of the Fairfax Stone. Though no longer a part of the West Virginia State Park System, the stone is among the most important monuments in the Mountain State. A line running north from the stone to the Mason & Dixon Line marks the western boundary of Maryland. The stone stands at the common corner of Maryland and the West Virginia counties of Grant, Tucker, and Preston.
