The county seat of Marion County, Fairmont, WV was established in 1820 as Middletown, then located in Monongalia County. Chartered by the Virginia Assembly in 1843 as Fairmont, a contraction of Fair Mountain, first considered as the name for the new town. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (http://www.wvrailroads.net/index.php/Baltimore_%26_Ohio_Railroad) (B&O) completed its line to Fairmont in 1852. The town is the home of Francis H. Pierpoint, War Governor of Virginia under the Restored Government, whose body is buried in a cemetery in the city.

Fairmont, WV is located about: 16 miles northeast of Bridgeport, WV; 18 miles southwest of Morgantown, WV; and 20 miles northeast of Clarksburg, WV.
Fairmont is located in the northern section of the state, along West Virginia's I-79 High Tech Corridor.
