By early 1974, site preparation was underway near Fayetteville, WV for the New River Gorge Bridge. Access roads for trucks hauling material were installed on the north and south approaches to the bridge site and work was progressing on the bridge's concrete abutments, being constructed by the Foster and Creighton Co., of Nashville, TN. At the top of the photo is a section of Appalachian Corridor "L" highway, designed by the Transportation Division of Michael Baker, Jr., Inc. and built by the joint venture of W & H Contracting and Ballenger Corp. Soon after the photo was taken, the erection of twin cableways to transport structural steel for the bridge would begin by the American Bridge Division of the U. S. Steel Corp., the prime contractor for the project.
