In 1938, Du Pont announced that it had develped a revolutionary man-made material called nylon. In 1939, the chemical company produced the first production of nylon in quantity at its plant located in Belle, WV. The company called the nylon raw material "nylon salt." In the summer of 1940, as part of a promotional campaign for its new product Du Pont introduced, "Miss Chemistry of the Future," a young lady dressed from head to foot in nylon garments, modeling an evening gown of light blue nylon lace.
