Flat Top, (Map (http://www.wvamaps.com/maps/index.php?place=Flat%20Top&state=WV&lon=-81.1069&lat=37.5894&pop=0&elev=3245&county=Mercer)), an unincorporated village in northern Mercer County, boasts the highest elevation of any community in that county and in adjacent Raleigh County. As a result of elevation -- near the highest summit on Flat Top Mountain, home of Winterplace Ski Resort -- the community is becoming one of the most lucrative property markets in West Virginia. The completion of Interstate 77 (I-77), with an exit at Ghent, WV, has opened the Flat Top region to commuters from Beckley, WV, and Princeton, WV, to the north and south respectively. U.S. also runs through the community, paralleling I-77

The community takes its name from the level highlands upon which it is situated -- the "flat top," which follows the crest of "Great Flat Top Mountain" for nearly 30 miles, from the New River Gorge, in the northeast, to the Virginia border in the southwest.

Flat Top is a sister community of Ghent, WV, which lies along U.S. 19 on the north side of the Flat Top summit.
