Flatwoods Monster

Also known as the "Green Monster" or "Braxton County Monster," the Flatwoods Monster in the name provided to a visitor from an alien world that was allegedly confronted near Flatwoods, WV, in Braxton County, north of Sutton, WV, on the night of September 12, 1952. The encounter with the Flatwoods Monster is believed to have been a case of hysteria brought about by the sighting of a particularly bright meteor, but the tale from a local viewpoint remains fascinating. Eye-witnesses reported mounting a hilltop near Flatwoods after schoolchildren had claimed to have seen a UFO land or crash there. An adult who accompanied the children to the site alleged that a being from outer space stood near the spaceship, which was a glowing ball of fire. Within days, tales of the encounter and similar sightings of flying objects appeared throughout West Virginia newspapers.
