Fort Tackett

Fort Tackett, or Coal Fort, was located near present-day St. Albans in Kanawha County, being built in 1786 on land that originally belonged to George Washington.

Fort Tackett was destroyed by Indians in 1790. Near the fort the day before the attack, Mrs. John Young gave birth to a son, said to be the first white child born in the Kanawha Valley. The Youngs and others escaped to Fort Lee.
