Glenville, West Virginia

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

A community in Gilmer County. When originally laid out in 1845, the town was called Hartford. Name changed by an act of the Virginia Legislature in 1856, to Glenville, a name taken because of the glen or valley in which the community was located. Here was written, "The West Virginia Hills," one of three official State songs. Glenville, WV was the home of William Perry Brown, author of three score books for children, and for many years one of the most popular writers for the old "Youth's Companion." Home of Glenville State College, established in 1872.
