Grant Town, West Virginia
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
Grant Town, WV, is a community in Marion County, near Fairmont, WV, on Paw Paw Creek and was for many years a prosperous coal mining town. Its originally settlers were the McCoys, Ballah, Toothman, and Hibbs families. The town was established in 1901 by the Federal Coal and Coke Company and named Grant Town for Robert Grant, then vice president of the coal company. However, it was not incorporated until October 10, 1945.
Colonel Donald L. Sibray retired to a farm just north of the town before World War II, during which time he was commissioned to build the US Army ordinance works at nearby Morgantown, WV. The Sibray estate was the later childhood home of Rich Rodriguez, chief coach of the West Virginia University football team, the WVU Mountaineers.
