Latter site of the sulfur spring at Green Sulphur Springs, WV
The Green Sulphur Spring at
Green Sulphur Springs, WV, in northern
Summers County, formerly bubbled from a hillside above the banks of Lick Creek. Its mineral-infused waters were reputed to possess healing properties, as did many mineral springs in the time of its celebrity in the late 1800s. According to author James H. Miller, in his "History of Summers County, West Virginia," the saltiness of the spring had attracted elk, deer, buffalo to the Lick Creek, a tributary of
New River, along which the spring and community were located. According to some sources, the original Green Sulphur Spring ran dry after the completion of Interstate 64 through the valley in the 1980s. Others say a the water still surfaces in a small spring, pictured on this page, that is located in a pasture along W.Va. Route 20 just south of the community. Though perhaps not the original spring, the present spring does produce sulfurous fumes.
