Hanging Rocks

Perpendicular cliffs rising nearly 300 feet above the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire County, four miles north of Romney.

The scene of fierce battle between Delaware and Catawba Indians about 1736, it was also scene of skirmishes between Northern and Southern troops in 1861. This Civil War engagement is often referred to as "The Battle of Hanging Rocks" or the "Battle of Hanging Rocks Pass."
