Hartford, West Virginia
A community in Mason County, incorporated in 1868, with George W. Moredock first mayor. Hartford is located upon the lands of the original patent issued by the King of England to Col. Andrew Waggener for services in the French and Indian War. About 1851 William Harpold settled here and started the saw mill industry and manufacturing of salt. In 1853 some eastern capitalists from Connecticut began the development of salt and mining industries, naming the town Hartford after Hartford, Connecticut. W. A. Healy and George W. Moredock being the principal ones settled in the town.
