Hilltop, West Virginia

Hilltop is an early settlement in Fayette County that experienced rapid settlement during the 1890-1900 period. In 1890 Hilltop's population was 262 but by 1900 its population had grown to 761. Prior to Prohibition a large saloon operated at Hilltop known as the Shamrock. A post office named "Oak Hill" was established at Hilltop during the 1800s prior to the Civil War which was later moved to Oak Hill. At that time only three families lived in the immediate vicinity of Hill Top.
