A community in Putnam County, Hurricane, WV, (map (http://www.wvamaps.com/index.php/?place=Hurricane&state=wv&lat=38.4325&lon=-82.0203&elev=700&pop=5222)) was incorporated in 1888. Named for Hurricane Creek, which was so named about 1774, when surveyors discovered in that section the effects of a tornado that many years before had laid low the giant trees of the forest covering that section of the state.
