Coal River Mountain, one of the Cumberland Mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky, rises in western Raleigh County northwest of Beckley, WV. Since this mapping, revised in 1988, the topography near the summits of mountains has been transformed by extensive surface mining for coal. The Marsh Fork of the Coal River drains the region to the south of the mountain in the bottom half of the map. The Clear Fork of Coal River drains the region to the north of the mountain. Kayford Mountain, on the border of Raleigh and Kanawha counties, is mapped at top.
