Kanawha County

Formed from parts of Greenbrier County and Montgomery County (Virginia) in 1788. Named for the Great Kanawha River, which received its name from the Indian tribe which once lived along the river and in the territory now embraced within the county. The tribe's name had been spelled various ways by early explorers -- from Conoys to Connis to Kanawha and so-on. The 1788 act creating the county spelled the name of the county as "Kenhawa," which has never been officially changed by act of legislature or court, although by popular usage "Kanawha" has come to be the accepted spelling.
