Kermit, WV, is a community in Mingo County near the Kentucky border. Formerly known as Warfield and Lower Burning Creek, it was incorporated in 1909 and named for Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodor Roosevelt. Kermit is located on the Tug Fork River, a tributary of the Big Sandy River, along U.S. Route 52 (US-52) in the southeastern region of West Virginia. Coal mining has traditionally been the largest industry and employer in the Kermit area. Cabwaylingo State Forest and Laurel Creek Wildlife Management Area are respectively located to the north and south of Kermit.
