A community in McDowell County, Kimball, WV was incorporated in 1911. Named for Frederick J. Kimball, President of the Norfolk and Western Railway, who's railroad built its line through the mountains of southwestern Virginia into the previously untapped Flat Top - Pocahontas Coal Field during the 1880s. Kimball is the location of the first war memorial building erected in the United States to the memory of Afro-American veterans of the World War.
