Liberty (map) (http://www.wvamaps.com/maps/index.php?place=Liberty&state=WV&pop=0&county=Putnam&lat=38.605&lon=-81.73&elev=776), in northern Putnam County, is an unincorporated rural community, though formerly a small village. A former Esso garage, a large country store, and an oddly towered frame house are the most obvious remains of what was formerly a thriving town along a lumber railroad. Fisher Ridge Winery (http://www.wvexplorer.com/recreation/wineries/default.asp) is located on Fisher Ridge Road, NW of Liberty, and is open year-round for tours and tasting. Many farms follow WV-34, a popular scenic motor-route, through Liberty. Liberty is located between Red House, WV, on the lower Kanawha River, and Interstate 77 (I-77) near Kenna, WV. Liberty is situated on Painters Branch, a tributary of Eighteenmile Creek, northwest of Fisher Knob (elev. 1,100 ft.). Liberty is a popular retirement community and is part of the Charleston, WV, market area.
