Lilly Monument at Flat Top, WV
At Flat Top, WV, in Mercer County, near its common corner with Raleigh, and Summers counties, the sandstone monument which commemorates the lives of Robert and Fannie Lilly stands near the highest point in their ancestral lands. The Lillys, whose descendants have populated much of area in three-county region, settled to the southeast on the Bluestone River around 1805. The settlement, which became the community of Lilly, WV, was abandoned when the Army Corps of Engineers established Bluestone Lake in the 1940s. On a knoll just east of U.S. Route 19, the monument was built by descendants who would no longer be able to reach the Lilly burial ground at Lilly.
