Lower Falls of Coal River
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
The Lower Falls of the Coal River, in Kanawha County, 1 mile west of St. Albans, drop five feet over a series of sandstone shelves. Though the fall is not great, it was a significant barrier to easy navigation until a lock-and-dam system was built along the river in the mid-1800s. The lock-and-dam system was abandoned during the Civil War and fell out of use, though remnants of the channel are observable above the falls near the westward bank. A scenic and natural area has been installed along Strawberry Road near the falls.
