Marquis de LaFayette

Born in 1757, at the castle of Chavagnac, in Auvergne, France.
Died in Paris, 20 May, 1834.

Sympathic to the colonies struggle with England during the American Revolution, Lafayette first came to American in 1777. Volunteering his services without pay, Lafayette was commissioned a Major General in the Continental Army, on the 31st of July. That same year Lafayette forged a friendship with General George Washington, soon becoming a member of Washington's staff.

Fayette County and Fayetteville, WV were so named to honor LaFayette.
