Marshall University, with an annual enrollment of more than 16,000, is West Virginia's second largest institution of higher education. Marhsall is composed of eight colleges and schools specializing in science, business, medicine, fine arts, liberal arts, education and human services, information technology and engineering, and journalism and mass communications. Marshall's NCAA football team is the Thundering Herd. Its main campus is located in downtown Huntington, WV.

Marshall was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1837 as Marshall Academy in affiliation with the Southern Methodist Church. It was renamed Marshall College in 1857. It became a state institution in 1867 and was renamed Marshall University in 1961, although it had accredited as a university since 1938.
