From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

Mason County

Formed in 1804 from the western portion of Kanawha County and named for George Mason, author of the Constitution of Virginia and a member of the convention that framed the Constitution of the United States.

Bordering either side of the Kanawha River near its junction with the Ohio River, the county includes some of the most level lands in the state. Its economy is largely agricultural.

Residential development associated with nearby metropolitan areas of Charleston, to the southeast, and Huntington, to the southwest, are contributing to economic growth. Tourism associated with the Ohio and Kanawha rivers are contributing to its economy.
