Matewan, West Virginia

A community in Mingo County, Matewan, WV, was incorporated in 1897 and was named for Matewan, New York -- the hometown of the engineer who laid out the West Virginia town. In 1920, the battle to unionize the local coal mines led to bloodshed. The John Sayles movie Matewan (1987) is based on this incident, known as the Matewan Massacre. The massacre is reenacted annually.
